๐Ÿ“š My Mind Can Feel - The John & Yoko Book Club

Hi, everybody! Just a reminder that you can share your thoughts and opinions about the Mind Games standalone book and Elliot's book here even if you haven't finished them yet! This is a continuous dynamic, feel free to express what your mind has been feeling reading those any time you like! ๐Ÿ˜Š๐Ÿค

Also, in about an hour, Julian Lennon will be talking about his book Life's Fragile Moments on TalkShopLive. His book is one of my suggestions, and we'll discuss about it soon here inside the Forum! Signed copies of Julian's book are available at TalkShop. Here's the link to watch today's live conversation: https://talkshop.live/watch/dOgDdjxnN5Qy

You are welcome! ๐Ÿค It was a great moment as always! I really thought he had a wrist tattoo I didn't know about ๐Ÿคญ

His book looks fabulous! I'm really looking forward to getting to know more about Julian the photographer!

No need to apologize! I love long replies, I always write long ones too, and yours really made me smile! ๐Ÿ˜Š๐Ÿค

It's fascinating how John always seems to have if not an answer to our current problems or wonders but a reflection about them that is going to help us see the whole thing differently. That's how human he always allowed himself to be and even in front of a camera or audio recorder. He was all of us combined. And when I'm reading books such as the Mind Games standalone one, I can see that in every quote, in every different or similar way that he tells the same story, or how he would get extremely philosophical about details that we no longer pay much attention to. This is why, nowadays, the interview books are my favorites. There is no better way to know John than through his own words. Sadly, a lot of people disagree, saying that he used to lie frequently and misremember stuff, but that's also a way of knowing him; that's what's unique!

And you know, I always say that a lot of the things I once wrote about John (and about Yoko as well) are no longer what I think or what I takeaway, either it is from a song or quote. I suppose most people would feel shame about that, feel like they were wrong before, but I like it a lot. It means that "the more that I see, the less that I know for sure", which is a lyric that I take very positively. And I honestly think that's the biggest takeaway from anything John's ever said, "It's ok to change your mind". And this is why re-reading his quotes and the books is so important, not only because every single time we get to know and understand him a little bit better, but also because we get to do the same with ourselves.

When I thought about the name of the Book Club, that's exactly what I had in mind. What we are doing right now and doing every time we are reading about Lennono, is feeling. Just simply putting: feeling. Our minds feel every time we first read something, and our minds may feel something else entirely when we read it for the second time. Their beliefs, attitudes and opinions make our minds feel all the time!

Now going back to the Mind Games book, the JL Estate has been doing an excellent job helping the fans focus on mental health, they have been emphasizing that in every single thing they did this year (and I'm forever grateful for that btw), so I have no doubts that once you sit down to read the book again that's what's gonna help you feel better. Everything was thought out to help us, to make us feel happy and to make us smile. John's and Yoko's views and quotes will definitely have a new and powerful impact on your mental health! I'm very excited to know all about it later!
Appreciate it! I'm so glad to hear that. Same here, I love reading (and writing) long replies, especially when it's about these deep kinds of reflections (particularly the John and Yoko inspired ones!)

You're absolutely right, it is always incredible and awe-inspiring how much John is always so nearby, and so relevant, through his words and art. He never feels like he's not here, it always seems as though he's here witnessing the world along with us and offering current commentary. There's nothing about him that ever seems locked or stuck in another time, place, or era. I can't really conjure up anyone else who has the same sort of ethereal timelessness to them. His ability to be so personal and candid, especially in front of other people and recorded media, is a testament to how legitimately strong he actually was. I don't think he ever gave himself enough credit for that!

I'm in total agreement, the interview books are always the best, the most informative, and the most enjoyable. I've read countless books on/about John, but every one of them seems to end up just being some sort of reductive analysis that is always depersonalized from the subject himself! I know the idea of biographies is to be relatively objective, but no one actually lives their life objectively, everything we experience is totally subjective to our own perspectives, previous experiences, personal traits... they all seem to do him a great disservice. To get to know the real John that's always there and always was, I always find it so perfectly and directly when he's given the room to 'breathe' his own feelings and experiences on his own comfort level in that moment. If someone interviewed me, or any one of us, it would come across the same way. The interviews make him more human, but at the same time, demonstrate so clearly how and why his star shines much brighter than the rest of us. (There must be a better way to explain this sentiment, but I can't find it at the moment. I feel like you get it anyway!).

I completely share your feelings and ability to identify with the ability to change our minds, and be open to learn, and not to be afraid to adopt new perspectives - especially when it is about things within ourselves that we're trying to understand or reconcile with. There's no doubt that both John and Yoko have done much soul-searching within themselves throughout their lives, and definitely in my case, their expressions of this helped me validate the same ability to do it for myself. Something which I'll be forever grateful and thankful for! I'm so glad you've had the same experience from it, and that reading the standalone books have also been the key source of inspiration for it!! You said it so perfectly: feeling is the word!

I couldn't agree more, the focus and spotlight on mental health within (and beyond) the Mind Games campaign has been incredible, and it's been amazing to see how far-reaching it goes. I can attest that it certainly made a personal difference with me. Although it's not a terminology which was as commonplace, I don't think there's anyone who used their art, experience, and popular status to help develop understanding of mental health than John - both with a major intentionality, and sometimes just through living his own life in the public eye and within the larger public consciousness. This whole campaign has been a wonderful extension of that aspect! Your words are so true and deeply meaningful. I'm so excited to read it again! And to be able to share these things with others who just totally understand it, here in a safe place - how wonderful! ๐Ÿ˜

So endlessly glad we have Nutopia!!

I've been reading the Mind Games book and I just remembered that when I got it, the first thing that I did was go through the WHOLE book, page after page, wanting to see the images, especially the rare pictures. Then I realized I do that with every book that I get, even the biographies. Do you guys do that too or do you wait to get to the images while actively reading the book? โ˜บ๏ธ

It depends, if itโ€™s a really special book (as with the Lennon-Ono album companion books) I make myself wait to get the surprises as they come! But sometimes the temptation gets a bit too much ๐Ÿ˜Š

Agreed on both counts! Usually, I cheat a little and go right to the pictures, and after the initial shock and thrill of seeing some great new images, I finally put it down and start again the right way...! With the standalone album books, I did check the Imagine one for the images first, but the other two I managed to keep the suspense for actually reading it all the way through, which in the long run was so worth it!! The Mind Games one is easily my favorite book of all the books I own! Now the question is, do I skip to the pictures in Elliot's book...

And it is frequently very tempting. I know I am a really visual person, so that's probably why I go to the images first, but make it all a surprise sounds truly satisfying!

About Elliot's book, I've seen some even though my copy isn't here yet, and they all got me very excited to go check the images first. Some very private ones, very fascinating!

I skipped to the pictures whenever any of the Estate's collection books arrived ๐Ÿคญ even the ones that come inside the boxsets! I'm always just too curious, but it does some times feel like I'm seeing spoilers! The checked all the photos from the Mind Games one that came inside the boxset while I was crying recording my unboxing video :ROFLMAO:

And speaking about the Imagine book, have you guys ever seen this picture of John?

I had never seen it before anywhere! I recently found it randomly on the internet and I'm quite sure this is from the Imagine standalone book but from the Collector's edition! It's so, so beautiful. John looks stunning, as always! And it's a joy to see rare photos!

Yes, I do. Then I get overwhelmed and need more time to actually READ the book.

For sure! The wonderful teasers of images from Elliot's book (both in the interview articles and the ones posted here!) are super tempting! I have the book sitting right here, but I'm not sure if I can bring myself to go right to the photos...though I think I will! ๐Ÿ˜‚

I totally get that, the books within the box sets too do a fantastic job of arranging and displaying the photos. I love to compare their layout within those books to the standalone ones, they're both very excellently formatted!

I feel like I've seen that great photo of John before, but I truly can't remember for sure... hopefully it is inside that collectors edition! It would be wonderful to know what the extras are that are exclusive to that version. The more John pictures the better!

I did post that photo everywhere when I found it :ROFLMAO: so now it's definitely all around the internet!

As far as I can remember, the standalone book has twice the pages of the boxtset version and the collector's version has twice the pages when compared to the standalone. Sadly, again, if I'm misremembering, the Imagine book was the only one that got a collector's version. That are definitely some gems that we can't easily find on the internet! I wish there was a collector's version of the Mind Games book.

Something that I love from the Estate's Collection books are John's sketches and with the Mind Games book it hasn't been different. I always analyze every single lyric detail and wonder about how and why John changed the verses. When I first watched Get Back I was so anxious because, while the boys were writing and rehearsing the songs, all I could think was "They are never going to get to the final result", what makes absolutely no sense ๐Ÿคญ. I always find it fascinating to pay attention to how John structured the song in his mind before the final recording.

One of my favorites from the book is, evidently, the Mind Games sketch that had the following beautiful verses: "Love is a flower with power that grows within your mind" and "Yes is an answer that's mirrored in your soul". So poetic!

Did any other lyric change or sketch from the Mind Games book stand out for you guys?

Spoilers for Elliot's book, We All Shine On - I won't be using the spoiler button here for now because this is an open discussion thread but if necessary, I'll apply it.

Since my physical copy hasn't arrived yet, I got myself an audiobook version of it too and, honestly, it was the best decision I made. Elliot's voice provides comfort and reassurance, after so many years of constantly listening to the Lost Lennon Tapes, it feels that this is not only the voice of John and Yoko's friend but a friend of mine as well and what's better than to listen to a story told by a friend, right?

I finished the first chapter with unstoppable tears running down my face. Sean is absolutely right, Elliot is a brilliant storyteller - of course I've known that for a long time now, but as it was with the LLT, the focus was always more on John and Yoko, and now not only I'm getting to know J&Y a bit more but I'm also learning more about Elliot and his own feelings and emotions. I think Elliot is the friend we all aim to be, he was always there with an open heart and real love. The first chapter was devastating but definitely important for the understanding of what was happening inside the Dakota and inside the hearts and minds of the ones that loved John. Elliot shared something I've always felt about that day and I wasn't even there... I guess that's the power of the love we all have for John, it transcends time and place and comes together as one in the whole universe.

And Elliot's description of Yoko, it made me cry harder, if that's even possible. John deserved better, Yoko deserved better, Sean and Julian deserved better. All his friends and loved ones, all the genuine fans. How I wish John was here... And the way Yoko kept remembering, thinking and vibrating love - that's one resilient soul.

And I'm not gonna lie, I really believed it was a ghost for a second.

By the way, I once heard a rumor that Yoko saw John's ghost seated at the piano in the Dakota, could totally be made up, I really never saw Yoko saying any of that (Ringo did say he saw John twice and while he was living at Tittenhurst Park). Maybe our friend GDN will know if it's true or not.

I'm not sure because I'm not used to SiriusXM, but it seems to be 211 or 217! And Rick is from California so definitely 9:25 there. Wait... Did he mean pm or it already happened?
Yeah, that's the part which was confusing me as well...! Going to pull up SiriusXM on my computer and see if I can find anything!

Thank you! The way it was worded and the fact that it was promoted one hour ago made me think it is still about to happen! Maybe he meant tomorrowโ€ฆ Iโ€™m lost now ๐Ÿ˜… Let me know what you find out!
