🎵 Favourite Yoko song(s)

It's too hard to choose, but one of my very favorites is "My Man" - I was immediately entranced by it when I first heard it. The production and the melody are fascinating, it's affectionate but also quite eerie, there's such a mystic quality to it. The vocals are so haunting too, Yoko's sweetness, combining and contrasting with those haunting backing vocals. It's very heartfelt but there's still something about it which feels detached. It very ethereally portrays the era in which it was made, both moving on but still in a haze of confusion, chaos, and sadness.

I had often wondered what John would have thought of the song, both as a loving message to/for him, but also simply as a fantastically constructed pop track. Imagine my surprise when I first read the Onobox liner notes and finding out that he had actually heard and known the song after all! It makes it that much better and even more poignant.

That great track pulled me into the whole album, and I've been so fond of It's Alright (I See Rainbows) ever since. After searching for quite some time, I finally found the Ryko CD! I've had the LP for years now, but really happy to have this version to play now! :)

I am such a fan of Yoko, it's impossible to pick one favorite. I agree with everyone's picks above, but here are a few personal favorites that maybe get overlooked. I remember buying the Onobox when it was released -- it was my first serious dive into her music, and it was a treasure trove of fantastic music and I bought it as a John Lennon fan, but it made me a hardcore Yoko fan. One of the first songs to grab my imagination was one that I assume was created for that compilation -- a mash-up of pieces from Fly into a new track called "Head Play". It blew my mind then and it still does (and it is amazing on headphones).

Also, that collection was, I believe, the first release of "Mildred, Mildred", which @greenovation mentioned earlier.

(I always wanted that white "Ultracase" version of the Onobox, which contained the boxset plus one of Yoko's Keys To Open The Universe, but I never was able to track one down.)

Rising was a big album for me too. I loved hearing Yoko jamming with Sean's band. I wish Yoko/IMA would have made more albums, but I'm thankful for the one we got. Maybe my favorite from that set was "Wouldnit". It's such a slinky, sexy groove!

Finally, from the brilliant Take Me To The Land Of Hell, I'll choose "Cheshire Cat Cry". God bless David Letterman for always having the greatest musical guests, and for putting this on TV:

And I'll take the opportunity to once again hope that in time the Yoko reissue project will continue and we will get the post-Apple albums (plus A Story) on vinyl/digital/streaming with the same care and quality that the Apple years received. I know the Estate works so hard and keeps so many plates spinning at the same time, and we must be patient, but I hope the rest of Yoko's catalog will get back in print as soon as possible.

Love this post. You’ve really put into words exactly how I feel about these songs! It always makes me feel so happy when I see others who have found such joy in Yoko’s music and artwork in a world where so much needless hate is shared everywhere.

Rising and Blueprint for a Sunrise are two albums I consider masterpieces, plain and simple. Yoko was on an incredible streak musically from the nineties to the teens (well, she has been her entire life, but you know what I mean)!

And I have to say, I think we’re all looking for the rare Onobox edition, maybe someday we’ll find it 😂

Totally agree! That run of albums from Rising through Warzone is really special. And it's great having this community to share our appreciation with others who "get it".
