50 years ago today, John Lennon performed live onstage for the last time after promising Elton John that he would if their collaborative song Whatever Gets You Thru The Night got a number one. Obviously, the incredible and iconic song that came out from that partnership got its deserved number one and on Thanksgiving night in 1974, John faced some evident anxiety and performed for his fans.
Famously, during that night, John referred to Paul McCartney as his "old estranged fiancée of mine". What few people realize is that John used to refer to Elton as his fiancée as well.
That day was also extremely important because John and Yoko saw each other backstage, John wore a flower Yoko gave him. And a few months later, after they got back together, @Sean was born and Elton chosen to be his godfather. When Sean interviewed his godfather during the celebrations of what would have been John's 80th birthday, he told Elton he grew up seeing the photo of his parents together that day, an evident symbol of their love.
Elton always talks about how loud the crowed was that day. I really wish I was there, this is one of my top three moments in music history that I would go back in time to see. Whenever I see/hear the video of Elton calling John on stage, I get emotional. When I remember he sang Beatles songs even more. Is it one of your favorite moments of John Lennon's career too?
Ps. I don't consider the Salute to Sir Lew to be his last live performance because it was a taped televised one. I consider it to be his last public performance.
