This is a great question!
I too would be curious if John ever shared any sentiments on or off the record about the film, or any other Python projects in particular. We certainly know from the 1980 interview with Andy Peebles that he was quite a fan of Fawlty Towers, and you may find the following 1973 quote of his interesting, while discussing The Goon Show:
"There are records of some of the original radio shows, some of which I have, but when I play them to Yoko I find myself explaining “that in those days there was no monty pythons ‘flyin’ circus,” no “laugh‐in,” in fact, the same rigmarole I go through with my “fifties records,” “before rock it was just Perry Como,” etc. What I'm trying to say is, one has to have been there!"
To add onto your question, I would actually be more curious to know if anyone is aware of exactly how much he knew of The Rutles. We've all probably heard variations of the same anecdote that he loved it and merely cautioned to remove 'Get Up And Go' because of its extreme closeness, but it seems to vary whether John had an LP or tape of the soundtrack album or whether he had a videocassette of the film. I would certainly imagine he was able to see its live cable viewing and that he would have been aware of its airing in advance, the keen reader and TV viewer that he was! It would be wonderful to know which (if either) he had in his possession and if anyone in his orbit knew his actual proximity and reactions to it!
