The recording I might be most looking forward to in the box is the live acoustic rendition of 'Imagine' from December 1971 at the Apollo. This has been on some long out-of-print John releases, where I first heard it as a young and enthusiastic fan. It is probably my favorite recording of the song, actually!

It's a precious gem of a performance - the way the guitars and Yoko's drum reverberate off the walls and make it sound so cavernous, as John proudly sings and plays with such intensity and meaning. I always picture it as a moment in which he becomes a true folk troubadour like Woody Guthrie or Phil Ochs, who were no doubt influential on such an idealistic mindset.

I also love the way the audience applauses after the first 'yoo-hoo,' but perhaps most of all, I've always been so taken by his little insert after "Imagine no possessions," where he quietly but painfully says "I'm trying to." It's an incredible moment, where John the singer and John the man have a dialogue right there on the stage. It put into perspective for me how "Imagine" is not just a song of hope, but a standing testament of what we aspire to be; how John the man felt personally accountable to try and hold himself to the standards that John the artist so beautifully put into song.

That kind of honesty, integrity, and resilience is an incredible and immutable part of why John has been and always will be my very favorite musician - and it's all right there in those two and a half minutes. I'm so glad this recording will be available again in POWER TO THE PEOPLE.
