JOHN LENNON ā€˜MIND GAMESā€™ MEDITATION MIXES

Sean Ono Lennon and The John Lennon Estate have partnered with the consciousness-expanding phone app, Lumenate, to exclusively release nine reimagined Meditation Mixes of John Lennonā€™s classic 1973 peace-and-love anthem, ā€˜Mind Gamesā€˜.

The newly transformed mixes have been designed (in combination with the frequencies of light from the Lumenate app) to put the listener in a relaxed, meditative state, to help guide your mind into deeper states of consciousness.

Various sound design techniques and processes have been applied to the original 1973 two-inch multitrack recordings, and in some cases have been enhanced with additional instrumentation from producer Sean Ono Lennon, son of John Lennon and Yoko Ono Lennon.

LUMENATE 'MIND GAMES' MEDITATIONS

The Lumenate app uses the flashlight on the back of oneā€™s smartphone, strobed at research-driven frequencies onto a personā€™s closed eyes to neurologically guide them into a state of consciousness between that of deep meditation and psychedelics.

Each of the nine Meditation Mixes has been paired with a unique, deeply immersive light sequence, using carefully selected flicker frequencies to accompany the mind-and-mood-altering sound. These singular, mind-altering sequences elevate the musical journey, deepen the sense of relaxation, and allow users to see, hear and feel the music like never before.

The ā€˜MIND GAMESā€™ Meditation Mixes launch today, May 1st, as part of Mental Health Awareness Month.

The experience is available for free, exclusively via the Lumenate app.

SEAN ONO LENNON

ā€œIā€™m very happy to be working with Lumenate on this release for Mental Health Awareness Month,ā€ said Sean Ono Lennon. ā€œI think our Mind Games project is fun, meaningful, and potentially mind-expanding.

I have been using the Lumenate app for my own personal meditations since it launched, and have had many profound experiences.

My father was famously into meditation. I remember trying the ā€˜flicker machineā€™ he kept in the bedroom, which is what first introduced me to the idea of stroboscopic brain wave induction.

I thought it made sense to combine the music of ā€˜Mind Gamesā€˜ with the science of Lumenate. I really hope people enjoy the results as much as I have.ā€

TOM GALEA, CO-FOUNDER AT LUMENATE

ā€œItā€™s been such a privilege working with Sean and The Lennon Estate on this exciting collaboration,ā€ said Tom Galea, Lumenateā€˜s co-founder.

ā€œThe journeys it takes you on are so deeply relaxing and emotive, providing a uniquely powerful canvas for exploring your mind. I canā€™t wait for the world to experience it. Itā€™s already had such a meaningful impact on me personally.ā€

LUMENATE 'MIND GAMES' MEDITATIONS

The ā€˜Mind Gamesā€™ Meditation Mixes create their own space while maintaining firm, authentic roots in John Lennonā€™s original recording of the original song.

Each of the nine mixes has been radically altered, slowed down and extended, ranging from 5 to 10 to upwards of 33 minutes, allowing for the musical soundtrack to wash over the listener and provide a relaxing, immersive, deep listening and meditative experience.

  1. MIND (Binaural āˆæGamma Wavesāˆæ 100Hz) 10:02
  2. MAGIC 10:57
  3. SPACE (Binaural āˆæTheta Wavesāˆæ 8Hz) 5:42
  4. SEED 5:59
  5. YES 6:03
  6. SPIRIT (Binaural āˆæBeta Wavesāˆæ 15Hz) 5:35
  7. SURRENDER 23:41
  8. PEACE 33:37
  9. LOVE (Binaural āˆæDelta Wavesāˆæ 0.5Hz) 12:32

BINAURAL BEATS

Four of the tracks are presented as Binaural versions that each focus on different types of brain waves: Beta, Delta, Gamma, and Theta.

Dubbed ā€˜Mindā€˜, ā€˜Spaceā€˜, ā€˜Spiritā€˜ and ā€˜Loveā€˜, these tracks feature a Binaural Beat ā€“ an auditory illusion created within the brain when the left and right ears hear two slightly different frequencies whose difference is perceived as a new frequency which can activate different brain patterns for scientifically proven therapeutic effects.

Beta waves occur when thinking, Delta waves are produced when completely relaxed in deep sleep, Gamma waves are associated with high levels of thought and focus, and Theta waves are produced while sleeping or daydreaming.

MIND GAMES

John Lennon completed his song ā€˜MIND GAMESā€™ after reading the 1972 book Mind Games: The Guide to Inner Space written by Robert Masters and Jean Houston. The book offered exercises to help people train their minds to focus on positivity by looking inward. The song was the title track of the album of the same name.

A breakthrough album from John in which he employed the cream of the crop of New York session musiciansā€”Mind Games is a fan favorite that remains a cult classic ever since its first release on October 29, 1973.

Recently, Rolling Stone selected ā€˜MIND GAMESā€™ as #5 on their list of The 100 Best Beatles Solo Songs declaring, ā€œā€˜Mind Gamesā€™ is John at his most unfiltered: his boyish excitement, his slide guitar, his madcap humor, his spiritual yearning, his walrus-adjacent poetry.ā€

Yoko Ono Lennon said: ā€œJohn was trying to convey the message that we all play mind games. But if we can play mind games, why not make a positive future with it ā€“ to be a positive mind game?

ā€˜Mind Gamesā€˜ is such an incredibly strong song. At the time, people didnā€™t quite get the message because this was before its time. Now, people would understand it. I donā€™t think in those days people knew they were playing mind games anyway.ā€

LUMENATE

Launched in 2021, Lumenate has been on a mission to revolutionize the mental well-being space by making impactful altered states of consciousness more accessible than ever before. Though many are aware of the benefits of meditation, and the emergent field of psychedelic therapy, due to barriers of cost, time and legality, these benefits are inaccessible for most people. Lumenate is here to change that, allowing users to reach these deep, explorative states instantly and effortlessly using only a smartphone.

Golden Globe-winning actress, Rosamund Pike, is the companyā€™s Creative Director and voice of the app.

Lumenate has worked alongside leading psychedelic researchers and musicians to create a series of experiences that help users to fully immerse in the present moment, reducing stress, ruminative thoughts, and brain chatter, and also from this mindset gain a new perspective on impactful topics. 93% of regular app users report a greater ability to feel present in the moment when using Lumenate with 94% reporting a positive impact on their mental wellbeing.

The state that Lumenate helps one enter has been shown to ā€œinduce visual effects of comparable intensity as induced by psychedelic substances,ā€ as published in a research paper by Dr. Timo Schmidt of Freie UniversitƤt Berlin, an expert on flicker light simulation (FLS) and lead researcher of Lumenateā€™s Berlin study. As demonstrated by his research published this year, this flicker induced state of consciousness also ā€œsignificantly enhances the listenerā€™s emotional response to musicā€, especially ā€œjoyful activation.ā€

ā€œWe have explored how very simplistic flicker light simulation can intensify the emotional response to music. This effect should become much stronger when one synchronizes the FLS with the music, as Lumenate is currently doing,ā€ reported Schmidt. ā€œWe demonstrated that flicker light stimulation can increase the emotional response to music with approximately half the effect size of psilocybin,ā€ adding, ā€œIt seems that the signals from the eyes are not only processed in the visual part of the brain, but are also having effects on broader brain function. Interestingly, this seems to be a mechanism shared with psychedelics.ā€

Though Lumenate has pushed the boundaries of whatā€™s possible, combining the latest scientific research with the latest mobile technology, the use of flicker to induce powerful altered states of consciousness is nothing new. In fact, it arguably dates back to the start of mankind and the deep relaxation triggered by seeing the flicker of the flame.

Flicker however first emerged in the cultural sphere through Brion Gysinā€™s Dreamachine which caught the imagination of the beat generation. It captured the minds of many, including Aldous Huxley, William Burroughs, Allen Ginsberg, Iggy Pop, Marianne Faithfull, David Bowie and many more.

John Lennon himself had an early ā€˜flicker machineā€™ complete with goggles on his bedside table in New York, which allowed him and Yoko to effortlessly tap into these deeply meditative states.

I love these so much! It's a treat to all the meditation lovers šŸ¤ and as I always say, it's also a great introduction to meditation for the ones that never tried it before! Nothing better than inner peace lullabied by John Lennon's voice

As I know that there are a lot of autistic John&Yoko fans out there - just like me - and who will love to listen to the Meditation Mixes but might be sensitive to the lights, I wrote down a few tips on what we can do to have a safe and excellent experience:

- First of all, read the medical instructions on the Lumenate App carefully before embarking on the beautiful Mind Games meditation journey;

- Don't turn your phone's light directly to your face, it is going to flash for as long as the mixes last;

- Cover the light a bit or completely with your finger;

- The frequencies of the mixes might also be a lot for some of us, so don't listen to it max volume;

- Don't listen to it in a completely dark room, that will help you to not focus only on the light coming from your phone;

- Use some eye protection, sunglasses or your own hand;

- Cover the light, turn it away from your face and just enjoy the sound of John's voice and melodies;

- Always keep your eyes closed, even you're covering the light or using some eye protection.

The tips above might affect the conclusion of your meditation experience, since the intention of it is to have more intense, effective and psychedelic results by using the lights, but you'll be able to appreciate the Mind Games Meditation mixes just the same šŸ¤

Thanks Mariana! That's a very helpful guide. It's reassuring to remember that it's easy to pause or stop the experience at any time by just putting down your phone, so you really can go at your own pace.

Absolutely! It's an adaptable experience, and very welcoming. If you know what makes you more comfortable to enjoy the mixes, that's what you should do šŸ¤

I think that having an instructions/guide page similar to the medical instructions one would be great! One that is easily visible and a clear option, something very literal too: "If you are autistic and need instructions, click here". I think that's important to know that autistic people might have different reactions/sensitivity from the photosensitive people in general.

Let me know if there's anything I could help you with. I'm totally open to talk more about my experience as an autistic person using the app and help improve the accessibility!

And an addendum is that we can also use meditation mixes without necessarily using

I am also autistic and I think that a guide before the experience would help prepare the person for what is to come. Another thing - more specific to me - I think there could be more options to change some of the functions, for example: turning off the light or decreasing its intensity, making the screen during the meditation even darker to induce sleep and things like that. The autistic experience is very unique because we are very different from each other, so giving the person options to choose from would help a lot.

Thanks so much for the feedback, I've forwarded this on to our design team šŸ‘Œ

Right now we're working hard on visual accessibility but hoping to widen this to other forms of accessibility soon :)
You are already doing a good job, I'm sure that every change will be for the best. Success to you always!
