After much deliberation (do I really need this box set? Is it necessary? Don’t I already have enough CD box sets and other sets in my collection at home?), I finally purchased a sealed, and therefore flawless, copy for 135 bucks (serial number: 5727), and I can say that I have not regretted the purchase.
I didn’t stick to the specified order of the CD folder: I sorted Yoko’s releases chronologically, which meant that more recent CDs unfortunately didn’t fit in; they are now stored separately from the large folder, a makeshift solution which does not necessarily correspond to my ideas. However, a superb WEDDING ALBUM CD box manufactured in Japan fits inside, including all extras such as the booklet, poster, postcards, etc.
As for the regular albums from 1970 to 1980, I have sorted all CD editions and booklets: the 2010 remasters from the white box set, as well as some remixes from the last 25 years or so, and outtakes CDs. I placed last year’s single CD POWER TO THE PEOPLE, which summarizes the highlights of both One-To-One concerts from 1972, behind the insert for the 1986 release LIVE IN NEW YORK CITY.
The box set was released in fall 2010, conceived by Jonathan Polk, of Boxofvision LLC., just in time for John’s 70th birthday. It contains a folder that holds CDs, booklets, and CD digipacks, as well as a softcover book with background information on each album and promotional material („The Catalogogy“). Last but not least, there is a thicker booklet with all the album covers, including inner sleeves, in record format („The LP sized Album Cover Book“).
It’s complaining on a high level, but I think it’s a shame that they didn’t just design a JOHN & YOKO BOX OF VISION—that way, you would have had everything complete and comprehensive in one box. Nevertheless, it is a time capsule that brings a lot of joy.
Format: Height 38.1 cm; width 33.0 cm; depth 10.2 cm.
The front features a silver-colored print of a portrait of John; the back features a reproduction of John’s drawing “Baby Grand.”
Limited to “no fewer” than 7,500 copies. How many have actually been sold to date is unknown.
