20/11/21 will be a day I never forget. After visiting Abbey Road studios in the summer, it took a bit of persuading to talk the wife into going again (it wasn't cheap). But due to the fact we were now able to take photos inside the studio, I put my foot down (by that I mean I begged for a few days and done all the chores ).
I arrived in London’s Paddington station around 11am, I had planned a route that would take me to a few places of interest to a Beatles nerd like myself. As we left the station, we made our way to number 34 Montague Square to visit Lennon’s famous home that he first lived with Yoko. Having been lucky enough to visit all of John’s homes (all over the world except Kenwood ) and having visited London several times, I was shocked if never been! Anyway, as you can see from the pictures I've finally ticked that one off!
I then made a short trip to Baker Street, specifically, number 94! The home of the old Apple boutique! What is now a very boring looking building (had to show the wife the Fool’s psychedelic art). Took a photo of the famous blue plaque.
I was now moving onto the next location, Macca’s house! This was another one I was surprised I’d never been to before! It was only around the corner from Abbey Road and I was here in the summer! What a wally! Such a nice street, very posh and I couldn't believe that in what looked like a simple house (albeit expensive) some of the greatest Beatles songs were written! I quickly took my photos and looked at the time, it was now time to move onto Abbey Road and the main event.
As we arrived at Abbey Road, the queues were big but I didn't care. As we walked up the famous steps, I still had that feeling, even though I’d done it in August. We made our way to studio 2 and this time, with photos allowed, I went to town!! Full battery in preparation! The famous control room steps, pianos, microphones...if it was in the studio, I snapped it! At the beginning of the lecture, I sat right next to them in anticipation. Later in the lecture, they asked and before he could finish his sentence my hand went up and sure enough...I WAS CHOSEN! An absolute highlight of my life...we were asked to play an E Major when instructed and so I did...I let it ring...i was playing A Day in the Life in studio number 2. Bucket list ticked for sure (photos attached). After that, I went into a dream and knew today had peaked. As the lecture finished, I threw caution to the wind and decided to play the’Fool on the Hill’ piano right next to it, couldn't care if they throw me out! I'd peaked! I played it and started of a rush of audience members doing the same until security came over!
I made my way out of the studio and into the night. What a memory. What a day. If you're still reading at this point, thank you!
